22nd Virginia Infantry and 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry
The 22nd Virginia Infantry was originally organized about April 25, 1861 as the 1st Kanawha Regiment comprising eight companies of infantry, one company of cavalry, and one company of artillery. Most of the men were from the counties of Kanawha, Putnam, Fayette, Jackson, Nicholas, Monroe, Boone, and Wyoming. The 22nd Virginia Infantry would be reorganized into ten companies of infantry around August 1861 under the command of George S. Patton, grandfather of George Patton of World War 2. At Droop Mountain, Patton would assume command of Echol's Brigade and the command of the 22nd Virginia Infantry would fall on Major Robert Augustus Bailey. The 22nd Virginia Infantry would enter the fight at Droop Mountain "about 550 strong" and would suffer 110 casualties including 14 killed, 53 wounded, and 43 missing/captured. Major Bailey would be among the killed.
The 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry was organized on January 15, 1862 with five infantry companies however would never exist as a cohesive unit until they were reorganized on May 21, 1862. These men were from the counties of Smyth, Tazewell, and Giles plus one company from Mercer County, West Virginia. After the reorganization of the 23rd VA, they would be under the command of West Point graduate Lt. Col. Clarence Derrick however commanded by Major William Blessing at Droop Mountain. The 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry would enter the fight at Droop Mountain "about 350 strong" and would suffer 60 total casualties including 5 killed, 26 wounded, and 29 missing and captured.

19th Virginia Cavalry
The 19th Virginia Cavalry "was organized on April 11, 1863 with ten companies which were composed primarily of former members of the 3rd Regiment Virginia State Line" as well as some men from the 31st Virginia Infantry. Roughly sixteen West Virginia counties contributed men to the regiment. The command of the regiment would fall on Lt. Col. William P. Thompson of Wheeling, WV. The 19th Virginia Cavalry would suffer 21 total casualties including 3 killed, 7 wounded, and 11 missing and captured.
