28th Ohio Infantry (Dom Dal Bello)
The 28th Ohio Infantry was organized at Camp Dennison, near Cincinnati around June of 1861 and were characterized as "a model of accuracy in drill and neatness in the performance of all camp duties". They would get their baptism of fire on September 10, 1861, fighting against the 22nd Virginia Infantry at Carnifex Ferry, WV who they would later face at Droop Mountain. At Droop Mountain, they would muster roughly 605 effectives and would be led by Lt. Col. Gottfried Becker. Col. Moor of the regiment would lead the combined effort comprising the 10th West Virginia Infantry and the 28th Ohio Infantry against the Confederate left.
Firearm
* The 28th Ohio Infantry was armed with .69 cal Austrian rifled-muskets as evidenced by both first-hand accounts and excavations done at Droop Mt Battlefield. These are obviously preferred, but the 1842 Springfield is the most common reproduction that is somewhat similar this weapon. **clothing returns show large numbers of great coats being issued in mid to late October. ***clothing returns show these items being issued in limited numbers. ****clothing returns show "boots" or "cavalry boots" being issued randomly to the men. Participants are welcome to wear boots of both styles in limited numbers. |

3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry (Andy Roscoe)
The 3rd West Virginia Infantry was organized on July 1, 1861 near Clarksburg, WV. It was the 2nd regiment raised in West Virginia and trained at Camp Hewes outside of Clarksburg. The men were largely from the counties of Monongalia, Harrison, Preston, Upshur, Taylor, Marshall, Ritchie, as well as some recruits coming from Pennsylvania. They spent all of 1861 in West Virginia and in 1862 were sent east to the Shenandoah where they would fight under Milroy at Monterey and McDowell. Eventually finding themselves back in West Virginia they received an order on June 10, 1863 to convert to mounted infantry and went into training at Fetterman on June 17. They would participate as mounted infantry at White Sulphur Springs, losing 39 killed, wounded, and captured. At Droop Mountain, they would be used by Averell against the Confederate center.
